As you’ll see, the downstairs of our house is significantly more complete than the upstairs! We bought this house with the intention of being here for many years, so while there is plenty of space for us to grow into it, some areas do feel very empty right now. Honestly, I don’t feel any pressure to rush and fill them, even if that was an option budget-wise. Especially with purchases as big as furniture, I try to make absolutely sure we’re getting exactly what we want and need long-term. In both the kids’ rooms and the open bonus room upstairs, I don’t know what that is right now, so I’m happy to wait. While things look a little sparse at the moment, know that at least some of that is intentional…though some of it is admittedly indecisiveness/waiting for the perfect pieces as well ;)

Charlie’s room: We clearly still need some more furniture to complete Charlie’s room (*pauses to do my daily Facebook Marketplace browse for a dresser*) but for now, the open space is perfect for elaborate MagnaTile structures and car tracks! We painted his room with Clare paint in Dirty Martini, which really made it feel like a “big boy room.” I think it’ll grow with him so well!

Azelie’s room: Being able to create a nursery for Azelie was one of the most exciting things about moving to this house! I love her sweet little room so much. She uses the same crib Charlie used as a baby and I definitely recommend it–it transitions to a toddler bed and has held up beautifully, going on five years.

Dave’s office: Dave has always worked from home at least part of the time, but it goes without saying that he’s been especially thankful for a tucked-away office this year. He received his standing desk as a birthday present in the nick of time last year (his birthday is March 3). Over the summer, we found these cool upstate NY pennant flags at a shop in Skaneateles and thought they’d be the perfect nod to his roots. I’m sure we will paint this room eventually, but I suppose that’s up to Dave :)

Upstairs bathroom: We gave this bathroom a quick refresh before we had guests over the holidays. It got a few coats of white paint, new towel hooks, much-needed new mirrors, and some easy, free art–pages from an old Rifle Paper Co. calendar that I tore out and framed!

Upstairs bonus room: In ten years, I expect this bonus room upstairs will be the most transformed space in our house. For now, though, it’s pretty much just an empty space for box forts, our beloved Nugget, and running laps to burn off energy on rainy days, ha! Someday, it’ll get a couch, a TV, a big bookshelf, and an awesome family photo gallery wall. We did paint it (with Sherwin Williams Cashmere paint color-matched to Farrow and Ball’s Parma Gray) this year, with the help of my generous in-laws, which has made it a much more pleasant space, compared to the dark cave it was before. I was nervous about the color, since painting anything a color other than white feels out of my comfort zone, but I LOVE the way it turned out.

Front porch: Popping in this photo from the spring because that was when our front porch looked its best! During quarantine, we were inspired to spruce up this space, and ended up using it almost daily for a few months. The garden stool is my favorite part–I was thrilled to find the perfect piece to tie together our green house and pink door.

Back porch: After having a great screened-in porch at our first house, I knew it was an absolute must-have for any future houses. We set up both a “living” and “dining” space back there and, after a looong search, landed on an outdoor rug we love. With the string lights lit, this space has been the backdrop of every little socially distanced gathering we’ve hosted all year, so we’re extra grateful for it!

And that’s it! I hope this unfinished tour of our home, exactly as it is right now, encourages you in whatever state your own space is in.
