A 2021 Take on a Classic Outfit Combination

If you follow along with my Outfit Diary posts, you probably already know that I have a soft spot for classic wardrobe staples. White tees, striped shirts, ballet flats, medium-wash skinny jeans…they’ll always have a place in my closet! I wore the outfit below on a day when we headed downtown to shoot a post with MVMT (truly, it was such a thrill to collaborate with a brand Dave has loved for years and I’m a new fan of–thank you so much for your support on the post!). I think it was my favorite outfit I’ve worn in weeks, if not months, because it epitomizes what I love to wear: classic basics with a feminine twist. An outfit recipe doesn’t get much more timeless than a white blouse, jeans, a trench coat, and ballet flats. While I’ve worn that exact look countless times and always love it, swapping a standard white button-down for one with a statement collar and my go-to skinny jeans for a new pair of boyfriend jeans felt like a fresh, 2021 twist. The result brought me so much delight! One more checkmark for my “delight in hobbies” goal, perhaps?

I’d love to hear, what’s one classic piece you love having in your closet? This trench coat is close to a decade old, but I never get bored of it!

  1. Ashley says:

A classic blazer has been my go-to since college! I love how easy it is to pair with a silk camisole, t-shirt, cashmere sweater or button down.

My trench coat is such a close second though! I love this classic, chic outfit on you.

  2. Mary Wilmot says:

I have a pencil skirt that I think I got in high school. I still love it. Also a couple of cashmere sweaters that I wear all winter. I love those jeans! I think I need them to replace my medium wash skinny jeans.

  3. Dana says:

I also just got light wash jeans! Mine are more a mom cut than a boyfriend cut, but I’m excited to wear them. They have holes, so are not school appropriate, but for $22 I had to buy them!

  4. Rhiannon says:

You look lovely, Lisa! Your outfit posts always inspire me to consider classic pieces like the ones in this photo. I’ve been looking for a tan trench for a while now and this might inspire me to take the plunge on the more pricey ones I’ve been torn on too!

  5. Emily says:

I have a neutral plaid coat that goes with about everything I own. It’s my “throw it on, and look chic” piece.
