A Casual Christmas Outfit

Winter

While I certainly wouldn’t hate a mailbox full of invitations to cocktail parties and fancy galas this time of year, 90% of the Christmas events I actually attend are far more casual–think cookie exchanges, small group holiday dinners, and the occasional slightly dressier date night. Assuming most of your December calendars look similar, I wanted to be sure to share a casual Christmas outfit this year that is comfortable and wearable, while still being festive! Enter a perfectly boxy red velvet top that’s just right for casual holiday occasions…not to mention, a no-brainer budget-wise.

Thanks so much for these fun photos, Amy Rae Photography! I had all my fingers crossed the Christmas decorations in downtown Raleigh would be up in time for our shoot and was so excited when they were :)

There are a few reasons this outfit works especially well for my fellow moms who may be at risk of being smudged by cookie crumbs at the holiday events they’re attending ;) I can’t get enough of velvet right now, especially since I discovered that it’s machine washable–a must for toddler mamas! I love the festive burgundy color of this shirt–it’s outside of my go-to color palette, but for just $10 with a coupon, I couldn’t pass it up.

Another Old Navy score? These ankle-length pants, which I bought during that awkward time when I was a few months postpartum but couldn’t quite wear my pre-baby jeans comfortably yet. A friend recommended these to me, claiming they’re impressively forgiving, and she was right. It was nice to have another option than leggings during that in-between stage, and I love that I could buy my normal size so I can still wear them now.

Finally, the convenience of a crossbody bag took on a whole new meaning to me a few weeks ago when I brought this Fossil one (c/o) to Charleston (you may have spotted it on Instagram here and here). With my heavy diaper bag tucked away in the stroller as we walked around the city, I loved being able to easily access my essentials in a “real” purse. At a party, I would absolutely leave my diaper bag in the car or tuck it away somewhere, keeping my phone and lipstick on hand in this bag. The fact that it’s a gorgeous emerald color that’s just right for Christmas is a bonus, but it also comes in gold and burgundy.

What events do you have coming up this holiday season? I’d love to hear what types of gatherings you’re looking forward to!
