What are you up to on the Fourth of July? Charlie is not a fan of loud noises, so fireworks are out of the question for us this year. Even though we’ll probably be keeping things low-key (suggestions welcome!), I love thinking about the Fourth of Julys ahead of us…it’s so sweet to imagine going out on a boat, eating popsicles, and watching fireworks with Charlie someday! The funny thing about being in Raleigh on the Fourth of July is that the city kind of clears out–everyone heads to the beach or the lake. It’s that mini holiday weekend migration that inspired the hair and makeup for this post!
When you’re in the sun and in and out of the water all day, hair and makeup need to be almost effortless–there’s no point in wasting time with a curling iron or cat eye in the morning. A fishtail braid keeps your hair off of your neck and prevents tangles all day, whether you’re swimming, riding a boat, or just lounging in the sunshine. (Don’t know how to fishtail braid? It’s easier than it looks! I learned a few years ago using this tutorial. I think they look best a little bit messy, so don’t worry if yours doesn’t turn out perfectly!)
The best thing about a bright lip is that even if you have no other makeup on and your hair is kind of a mess, you’ll still look chic! It’s my go-to trick for bad hair days :) On the Fourth of July, stick to sunscreen, maybe a tinted moisturizer and a touch of mascara, and then add your red lip at the end of the day for dinner and fireworks. I just upgraded the red lipstick I’ve been wearing for a few years to Beautycounter Sheer Lipstick in Scarlet and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I love it! It’s so moisturizing, it feels like a lip balm, and the color stayed put for a long time. It’s my new go-to red, no question!
