Why I Joined Beautycounter

Beauty

I have something exciting to share today! But first, let’s back up a little bit.

Charlie is in a funny stage right now where he either can’t sit still (not crawling yet, but any day now) or he isn’t content unless he’s being held. As a result, he is in my arms a LOT. A few weeks ago, I was snuggling him and realized some of my makeup had rubbed on to his little cheek. My mind immediately went into overdrive thinking back on what I had used on my face that morning, and I was eyeing his cheek for the rest of the day in case his skin had a weird reaction to it.

And then, it hit me–if I’m so concerned about the products I use getting on my baby, why am I perfectly okay with willingly putting them on myself every day?

For a few years now, I’ve tended to opt for more natural products and have had some wonderful results (switching from 10% benzoyl peroxide Clean & Clear face wash to my beloved One Love Organics face wash and experiencing much clearer skin as a result comes to mind). Recently, I’ve been doing a bit more research, and have been blown away by the fact that companies include so many chemicals that are known to be harmful in their products–including ones that have been linked to heartbreaking things like cancer and infertility.

That’s what led me to Beautycounter. I first looked into them a little bit a few months ago when I saw their collaboration with Target, and remember being impressed by their dedication to safer ingredients (they ban the use of over 1,500 questionable or harmful ingredients that are frequently used in personal care products), their transparency, and the variety of products they offered–from skin care, to makeup, and even to baby/kid products.

I turned to Instagram to connect with a consultant and sample some products (including all of the ones pictured in this post!)…at this point, loving their mission, but not planning on being anything more than a customer. Well, to put it frankly, I loved each and every one of the things I got to try. I’ll be the first to admit, Beautycounter is on the pricey side (comparable to the mid-range lines you can find at Sephora, like Laura Mercier or Bobbi Brown), and if I was going to pay those prices, I needed to be REALLY impressed. And I honestly and truly was.

I felt a little pull on my heart to get more involved, especially when a bunch of women who saw my initial Instagram messaged me to ask me to share how I liked the products I tried. Dave and I talked about it, I prayed about it, and ultimately, I decided that I wanted to be part of sharing this important mission of safer beauty AND help get really high-quality beauty products that I love into the hands of people I care about. It sounded like a win-win!

A few things I want to promise you, because I know I personally have a bit of a stigma about “direct sales” companies, and I’m committed to doing this my own way–a way that feels authentic to me. With that in mind, I promise:
1. Not to promote Beautycounter just for the sake of promoting Beautycounter. Just like everything I blog/share about, if I’m promoting something, it’ll be because I personally use it and love it, or it’s something I genuinely want to try. I’ll also be 100% honest if there’s anything I use that I don’t particularly like. Additionally, while I’m going to be exchanging many of my products for Beautycounter for the reasons I mentioned above, there are still clean things from other brands (like One Love Organics) I already used and loved that I don’t plan to switch at the moment–I’ll always be honest with you about that too.
2. To limit beauty content on Something Pretty to twice a month. I’ve always blogged about things I’m passionate about, and this has certainly become one of those things, but I know it’s not the only thing you want to read about! It’s not the only thing I want to write about either :)
3. To do the best I can to be a trustworthy resource to you if you’re interested in Beautycounter or have any questions about the mission, ingredients, products, etc. You don’t have to order via a consultant–something that I think sets Beautycounter apart in a good way–but I would, of course, be grateful if you did :) I’m not an expert, but I’m learning a lot and am soaking up all of Beautycounter’s resources so that I can share the best info I can with you.

My top four products so far: the Balancing Facial Mask, Citrus Mimosa Body Wash, Nourishing Rosewater Mist, and Tint Skin Foundation

Thank you so much for your support of this new venture, friends! I’m incredibly excited to be a small part of this company and to share it with you. I’ve added a Beautycounter page to the menu at the top of the blog for easy access to my Beautycounter consultant page, more information about the company, my testimonials about the products I’ve tried, and more, if you want to take a peek!

  1. I literally JUST touched base with a friend who is a beauty counter rep and is going to send me some samples and goodies to do a blog giveaway! I’m really interested to try and you have me wanting the body wash!

  2. Mary says:

Yay! You go girl! You will be hearing from me. :)

  3. Abby says:

Love this!! I’ve been wanting to try the tinted moisturizer for a while now! It’s been a goal of mine to switch out products one by one, so I’ll definitely be coming to you!

    • Lisa says:

Thanks, Abby!! I’m switching things out one by one too, starting with foundation (since I figure it comes in contact with the most amount of skin) and lip products (since I’m basically eating them throughout the day…which sounds super gross when you put it that way, haha!). Let me know if you have any questions about the moisturizer or anything else! Xoxo

  4. Hope says:

I just saw this brand in my friend’s medicine cabinet the other day! It’s always so helpful to know why someone else likes a product more than other products on the market. I would love to hear why you love your top four products and see reviews of some of your favorite products in the future! I’m excited to see your posts! :)

    • Lisa says:

Hey Hope! I shared my thoughts on those top four (and all of the products I’ve tried so far) on my new Beautycounter page! You can find it in the top menu, or at somethingprettyblog.com/beauty. Let me know if you have any questions about anything!

  5. Catherine says:

This is so exciting, Lisa! I have been putting this off but thinking about it in the back of my mind for a long time. I would love to try some samples and maybe start replacing my skincare items one by one as they run out!
    xoxo,
    Classic Catherine

  6. Abbi Hearne says:

Oh my goodness – I’m super excited for you. I would love to chat with you about what products would be best for me. I don’t have a huge budget, but I do believe my long-term health is worth investing in so I’m definitely open to doing the best I can with what I put on and in my body!

  7. Brooke Paris says:

I recently had a friend gift me some beauty counter products as a pre-wedding gift because she found out that a some of the products I had been using had hormone disrupters in them and she thought I probably wanted a healthy reproductive system, especially now ;) I have loved them all so much! So far I’ve only tried and purchased the skin care products but I’m super interested in trying the makeup too!

    • Lisa says:

That is so great to hear, Brooke! If you have questions about any of the makeup, shoot me an email–I’d love to help you pick out some products you would love! :)
And, more importantly, happy wedding month!!! Will be praying for you in these last couple of weeks of engagement!

  8. Dana says:

Looking forward to learning about the products you love and trying them out myself :)
