Home Tour: Move-In Day

Home

I’ve been tremendously encouraged following along with bloggers who share their homes as works in progress–not just the Pinterest-worthy finished product. Being in our new house, I’m already tempted to want everything to look exactly the way I want it, but having seen the ways other people have settled into their homes over months and years reminds me that these things take time…and it’s definitely worth the wait! I’m sure I’ll be sharing our progress in bits and pieces, but I’m also hoping to share a full tour every year, starting with the way our house looked the day we got our keys!

First things first, a picture outside our new front door :)

move in dayThe living room is on the left when you enter. We are crazy about the window, the built-in, and the marble fireplace, but I am practically counting down the minutes till my in-laws help us get rid of those green walls this weekend! We’re doing every room in the house (with the exception of the guest bath and nursery) in Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, color-matched to Sherwin Williams. The only reason we got such pricey SW paint is because we bought enough for the whole house during their 40% off anniversary sale! A tip the salesman gave us: if you buy paint without the color in it during a sale, you can return unopened tins later…or, you can come back and have the color added any time. Such a good idea!

living roomThe living room opens up to the dining nook and the kitchen. We’re replacing that light fixture this weekend too–much needed, as you can see. Sorry for the silly photo bomb :)

dining nookThat door in the kitchen leads to the screened-in porch and backyard. We’ve since purchased our patio set, an outdoor pillow, and some super inexpensive white plastic Adirondack chairs, making this the most finished area of the house. We’ve been taking full advantage of it, working on the porch and eating breakfast out there on nights when we stay over!

porchBack inside, to the kitchen! I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have white cabinets and decent appliances. Sometime in the next few years, we’d love to get new counters and add a white subway tile backsplash, but for now, we’ll just be adding a fresh coat of paint to the walls.

kitchenThis is the opposite view of the living room–I’ll be putting my desk against the left wall (since it’s the first thing people will see walking in, I am hoping this motivates me to keep it super tidy!). The hallway leads to the three bedrooms, the guest bathroom, and the laundry closet. The previous owners have those curtains up because their appliances didn’t fit in the laundry space, but our new washer and dryer will, so we’ll be putting the doors back up.

entrywayWe didn’t snap any pictures of the bedrooms before getting to work on them, so here are the photos from Zillow–first is the guest room/Dave’s office. With Dave’s parents coming in tomorrow, we got this room together pretty quickly, and it already looks SO much better! The guest bathroom, right across the hall, is also pretty much finished–it was the only room that didn’t need any paint, so we just added a new shower curtain and bath mat. Done and done :)

guest roomHere’s our room, which again, already looks a billion times better with a fresh coat of bright white paint :) I can’t wait till we do our big move in July and make this room a really cozy, serene place. We painted the master bathroom walls white as well.

master bedroommaster bathFinally, this picture isn’t great, but I couldn’t resist including a shot of my favorite room in the house: the nursery! It was the same taupe color as the guest room, but Dave painted it in Behr Billowing Clouds (also color-matched to Sherwin Williams paint) over the weekend, and I’m obsessed. You can see the color better in my recent Instagram. I am so anxious to add to this room and see it come to life over the next few months!!

I love the house! Where are your shorts from?

  2. Hope says:

Eek, this is so exciting! I love Chantilly Lace and I’m sure it will look gorgeous and make such a difference when it is covering all of the walls! Your nursery is such a pretty, calm color, too. I love seeing in-progress homes, rather than just the Instagram and Pinterest perfected versions, but I have such a time doing that with my own home. It’s hard to show the parts that I know aren’t finished, especially since it can take so long, but this is great motivation! I can’t wait to see the progress in the weeks, months and years to come! :)

It is crazy what a difference the right white paint has made so far–our bedroom and the guest room feel so much lighter and brighter, and I think it’s going to totally transform the living area! Thanks so much for the encouragement to share the work in-progress–I’m really excited to be able to look back on these photos in even just a few months and see how much we got done!

This thrills my soul! SO excited for y’all! My favorite photo is the one with your photo bomb because it’s just so real life! :) I am already giddy to see photos of everything painted. When we moved into our house we painted the cabinets white, and then waited a year to do a white subway tile backsplash and new countertops. It wasn’t pocket change.. but I was surprised at how inexpensive it turned out to be! Hope y’all can get a good quote too! XO

    • Lisa says:

Thanks, friend!! From what it sounds like, the counters will be the big ticket item, but the backsplash will be pretty easy and inexpensive–I am hoping that is true :) Your kitchen transformation was amazing!

  4. Andrea says:

So exciting! We bought and moved in our first home just last year just three months before Bode was born. Here’s a tip for appliances: Home Depot runs a package deal dishwasher, fridge, microwave, stove for an awesome price around the 4th of July and I believe Labor Day. They had Samsung in stainless steel for $2000 for everything last 4th!
Can’t wait to see more updates on the house!

    • Lisa says:

That is great to know, thank you!! It sounds like we are on the same timeline–our baby boy is due mid-September, so I have about three months to try to get settled in the house before he arrives. I’m just thankful to have even that amount of time, since our house hunt was making me nervous! :)

  5. Mary says:

Beautiful home! Can’t wait to see more pictures. I totally get that about wanting to get it all done NOW–I’m sure you know that it has definitely been a work in progress for us and still is for sure! But it’s been actually a lot of fun getting to see the (slow) transformations come together over time. I’m just so happy y’all found the perfect home for you and are settling in!

    • Lisa says:

Y’all are a GREAT encouragement–it has been awesome to see the progress in your house over the last few years!! Hope you can visit soon and see it in person! :)

  6. Dana says:

Can’t wait to see it in person!!!

  7. Kelly says:

YAY!! Love your photo bomb picture. And that screened in porch is dreamy. Can’t wait to see how you decorate. :)

  8. Kate says:

Your little house is the cutest! I love that built in by the fireplace. It will be fun to follow how everything comes together!
