My Morning Routine

Lifestyle

Sometime in the middle of college, I started to get into a morning routine. It was simple, but it gave me something I needed (breakfast within the first 30 minutes of waking up) and something I looked forward to getting out of bed for (reading blogs). Even when I had 8 AM classes, starting the day in a leisurely way made a big difference in how rested and prepared for the day I felt. I kept up a similar routine when I graduated and started working, but when I added a commute and having to cook for myself all the time into my daily schedule, I realized how beneficial it would be for me to add a few more good habits to my mornings. It’s so much easier to make excuses about skipping workouts or quiet time after a long day of work, don’t you think?

I was nervous about how my routine would once again have to change once Dave and I got married and moved in together. It has taken a little bit of trial and error, but we’ve done our best to be respectful of what sets the other up for the day well. We both love our morning routine now, so I thought I’d share it with y’all! It doesn’t always go perfectly, but this is what we aim for:

6:15: First alarm goes off (we have this alarm clock and it’s awesome) and Dave hits snooze. Maybe someday we won’t be snoozers, but not yet :)
6:20: Second alarm goes off and we get out of bed to throw on workout clothes.
6:30: Morning workout! I can’t do anything too intense without eating first, so we usually take a walk or light jog around our neighborhood (we do our runs and bigger workouts later in the evenings). If it’s rainy, I’ll do a Tone It Up yoga routine while Dave heads to our apartment gym.
7:00: We get back to the apartment and turn on the coffee maker (Dave always gets it ready the night before). I jump in the shower first, since my hair takes awhile to dry.
7:15: Dave showers while I pour our coffee and make myself breakfast (usually cereal, Tone It Up’s Perfect Fit Pancakes with berries, or a green smoothie and toast).
7:20: I settle onto the couch to read my Blessed Is She devotion, which is sent to my email. I LOVE it, and highly recommend it!
7:30: Dave joins me on the couch while I eat breakfast and check out my favorite blogs. He reads the Magnificat on his phone, checks Twitter (his social media of choice), and sometimes has a small breakfast.
7:50: We put everything away and pray a decade of the rosary together. We’ve done this almost every single day since we got married, and it has been amazing for us.
7:55: Time to get ready for work! A few of my current favorite beauty products: this face wash, this foundation, and this mascara.
8:25: I make my lunch or grab some leftovers.
8:30: We head out the door!

What’s your morning routine like? What’s your favorite thing about it? I’d love to hear!

  1. I LOVE reading & hearing about other people’s morning routines – there’s so much to be said about a day that’s started on a thoughtful, intentional note.

I’m impressed you have a solid two hours built into your morning before you even leave for work! As of this week, I’m working for myself (and gearing up for a move to Raleigh!), so my morning routine is changing drastically. I’m so, so thankful that I’ll now be able to construct an even better morning routine than before, as I firmly believe that how you start the day can set the tone for the rest of the day! Quiet time/devotions, exercise, and simply savoring a few quiet moments are definitely a part of this.

Thanks, Stephanie! Excited for you and all your big changes coming up–hope the move goes smoothly!

  2. Kristina says:

I love a good morning routine and I’m always inspired to restructure my own routine when hearing about others. I’m impressed that you only need 5 min of snooze time and that the first thing you do upon waking up is working out!
I don’t always have the same amount of time in the mornings due to a varying class schedule but the following things are always part of my morning: a good breakfast, quiet time, praying and looking at my Simplified Planner to know what I have going on that day. I wish a light work out was part of my morning but so far I haven’t been disciplined enough to make that a habit. Maybe something I should aim for in the future :)

    • Lisa says:

Your morning routine sounds wonderful! I have to admit…the one-snooze rule is Dave’s doing! If I controlled the alarm clock, I think we’d be much less successful at getting up on time :) My morning workouts started when I was working out extra to get ready for the wedding, and thankfully, the habit seems to have stuck! I find that it’s a lot easier to get up for something that’s not too hard, like a walk outside or some yoga.

    Love you guys!

  4. Alexandra says:

Ah! I love that you’re able to get so much done in the mornings. I have to leave for work by 7:30 so I often don’t get as much done as I’d like.

    • Lisa says:

Gracious, that’s early! We definitely had to start going to bed much earlier in order to get up early–we were pretty useless our first week of trying this routine when we were still going to bed closer to midnight!

  6. Kate says:

I love this! My husband is currently a grad student, which involves long hours in the lab and sleeping at odd times, while I work a regular 8-5 schedule. We’ve been married less than a year, but one of the things I’ve missed so far is being able to develop normal morning and evening routines. Looking forward to having more sweet time together like this when we get on a more routine schedule!

    • Kate says:

PS. I would love to read about what a typical evening looks like for the two of you as well!

    • Lisa says:

Thanks so much, Kate! I can imagine having such different schedules can be really challenging, but I’m sure it will be worth it when that hard-earned grad school degree is in hand!
I’ll definitely consider writing about our evenings in the future! We’re not in quite as much of a routine there yet, but hopefully soon :) Have a great weekend!

  7. Dana says:

    Snooze only once…proud of you!

  8. Kristen says:

You haven’t given me a review of the Roller Lash yet! Evidently it is good!!
